Platoon of the Dead

OK, kids, the project I was working on the last few weeks is my buddy writer/director John Bowker's PLATOON OF THE DEAD. John got me involved as camera/lights/sound guy as I've done on almost all of his projects. I also had a moment of insanity and volunteered to handle the craft services. Everyone seemed to like the food (chili, minestrone soup, tacos, lasagna, spaghetti, sloppy joes and lots of lots of sandwiches!) but next time I think I'll let someone else handle it. A big thanks to my wife who worked hard to help me get the food together.

We just finished up a 9-day shoot, straight through, no days off. Well, we had Halloween night off, so that was nice. The first day ended up being 18 hours and the second day went overschedule in a similar manner. Just about killed me. Things started to go smoother after that as we all got into a good rhythm and the schedule wasn't as ambitious as the days wore on.

Lots of tremendous performances, great effects and good times were had. We have 2 more days of shooting in December and the flick is due out from Tempe Video next summer. Here are a few pics I've been OK'd to share (thanks to Michelle for taking some of these)!

Me, Tom Stedham, Ariauna Albright and writer/director John Bowker. Tom flew in from Alabama and Ariauna flew in from Los Angeles. The rest of the cast were local.

Cast & crew at the "zombie house" in Peoria, Oregon.

Dr. Squid and his Zombie Babes!!!

John needs more sleep! Ariauna was a trooper, working the boom most of the times she wasn't in front of the camera.

Wild & crazy...nice tattoo.

Setting up the "barf shot." Ariauna could do the scene, but didn't want to see it!

Two tough chicks with a plastic gun. Hot!

My wife's lasagna was a big hit!

Master and apprentice - me guiding young Colter in the art of shooting behind-the-scenes video.

Zombie bride I did make-up on.

John and I having a calm discussion about the next scene. BFF!

Tom convincing me he deserved more screen time....

Eeeeeeeww!!! A rotting zombie soldier effect by me.

Their lips are sealed. Ariauna looks damn fine in a hat.

Ariauna models her severed zombie soldier arm.

Make-up on Marie by me.

Make-up on Lisa by me.

Our heroes, Chris, Tom and Tyler.

Lewis the zombie soldier and I (make-up by Rob Merickel).

Shooting the "Pile of Bones" scene.

Make-up on Michelle by Rob Merickel.

Special effects on Johnathan by Rob Merickel.

It was cold up in the woods!

Tom playing it up extra creepy with Amanda.

I don't know what was going on here. I was in the other room. Really.

Me with Michelle. She looks so serious!

Tom Stedham, me and Ariauna Albright. Good times. Good times.

Have done some editing on DEADLY PREMONITIONS and still catching up on sleep. Be back later...

Back...Then Gone Again...

Well, it looks like it may be a while until I will be given the OK to talk about and share some photos from the project I mentioned in my previous post.

In the meantime, I am back to working on DEADLY PREMONITIONS. One more sequence to shoot; editing continues as well.

I'm out of town for the weekend and then Thanksgiving rolls around so I will likely will be taking another break from posting.

Gobble gobble.

ZOMBIES!!!!

I've been kept busy for the last 2 weeks with a local production of a play version of NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD. I was on a team of make-up people and also played a zombie, along with my son. He had an awesome time! We even had a midnight show and it was by far the best - I think many in the audience had hung out at the bar nextdoor to the theater beforehand. They were really vocal - and it was cool.

Here I am making Rob Merickel up with his green base coat. Rob headed up the make-up team and did an awesome job.

I was shooting a scene in my garage today and look what happened. Hmmmm.....

I'm going to be MIA for about a month working on a project I am not allowed to talk about for a while. Be back sometime in November.

Eater in My Car!

I shot some pick-up shots with Amira on Saturday for DEADLY PREMONITIONS and then shot a fun sequence for the EATER project. Here is Amira in her car with my son playing the monster in the back seat. Good times.

Morgan Mayhem ROCKS!

Just got back from 5 hours of reshoots for DEADLY PREMONITIONS and my first time working with Morgan Mayhem. She was awesome - a real trooper and horror movie fan so she really "got" what we were trying to do. I think she even had a good time getting all bloody!

The week is going to be crazy with working on the Night of the Living Dead play for the next five nights straight and shooting more DEADLY PREMONITIONS pick-ups and stuff for EATER on Saturday.

The trick is to keep breathing, right?

Evilmaker Double Feature DVD!

Tempe Video is going to be putting out a double-feature DVD release of two movies I worked on - THE EVILMAKER and EVILMAKER 2: ABOMINATION. My buddy John Bowker wrote and directed both horror movies; I did camera/lights/sound and co-edited the first movie, shot and lit the last one. I even contributed a piece of music to the first one and helped with sound effects - I fondly remember sitting on the floor of John's house recording him punching a cantelope for just the right sound!

If all goes well, I'll be shooting a sequence for DEADLY PREMONITIONS tomorrow night. Working with someone new but she seems quite cool, so we'll see if she enjoys getting all bloody!

Bought a blonde wig last Friday for Amira to use in some pick-up shots I need for DEADLY PREMONITIONS - she still has the outfit she needs to wear, but her hair is a bit shorter now. Planning to shoot in a wide shot so the wig won't be too noticeable. Gotta keep on pushing to get this thing wrapped up!

As Mayor Farnsworth said in BLOODSUCKING REDNECK VAMPIRES, "Much to do! Much to do!"

Zombies!

Another five minutes of DEADLY PREMONITIONS is edited. There are two pick-up scenes I need to shoot and I have leads on both of them. Hoping to take care of them soon and wrap this puppy up! Spent some time last night on screen shots of the cast to use in the ending credits.

About 7 minutes of bloopers and behind the scenes so far, too.

Someone talked to me the other day about another possible screening of BLOODSUCKING REDNECK VAMPIRES. More news if it comes to pass...

Spent part of Saturday at the local stage theater making up about 30 people as zombies with my buddy Rob. Then everyone walked through the local farmer's market and around a big arts & crafts festival handing out fliers promoting the upcoming play version of Night of the Living Dead. My son and I are going to play zombies in the first three performances in October and boy is he excited! Should be fun!

50:15

Adding up the segments I have together thus far for DEADLY PREMONITIONS, that's my running time: 50:15. I've got four segments left to do plus the opening and ending credits. Planning on running a craigslist ad this weekend to try and cast the reshoot/extra scenes I need to do.

Spent last night putting together a demo reel for Robert J. Olin for him to take to an audition on Wednesday.

Gotta keep on plugging away...

8:19

DEADLY PREMONITIONS editing rolls on. Latest segment is 8:19. Was halfway through editing this segment and was just plain unhappy with how some inserts were playing. I decided I didn't want to be unhappy with it forever, so I shot some new inserts, recaptured them all and recut the whole section. I had to realign a lot of sound files around once things shuffled, but in the end it was way worth it. Ever have those happy accidents where things just fall into place and seem to have a thematic connection you never intended? Well, that happened so it was well worth the extra time.

And so it goes...

Get On The List

I've had several people ask me about getting copies of BLOODSUCKING REDNECK VAMPIRES, which as I mentioned in a post two weeks ago, recently sold out at the distributor. I've told them that they can be found at various online retailers and on EBay, but some people want to buy it directly from me - kind if the "support your local independent filmmaker" thing. Very nice indeed. The distributor said that they plan to do another duplication run sometime in the future, but are not sure how long they want to keep it off the market (so it's "fresh" when it comes out again).

IF you want to pick up the movie from me, drop me a line and I will add your name and e-mail to a list. When I run into more copies or they do the next duplication run, I will let you know it's available. Thanks to everyone who has supported the movie so far and to those still wanting to get it. So cool.

Remember

IF I HAD MY LIFE TO LIVE OVER

By Erma Bombeck
(written after she learned
she was dying of cancer.)

I would have gone to bed when I was sick instead of pretending the earth would go into a holding pattern if I weren't there for the day.

I would have burned the pink candle sculpted like a rose before it melted in storage.

I would have talked less and listened more.

I would have invited friends over to dinner even if the carpet was stained, or the sofa faded.

I would have eaten the popcorn in the 'good' living room and worried much less about the dirt when someone wanted to light a fire in the fireplace.

I would have taken the time to listen to my grandfather ramble about his youth.

I would have shared more of the responsibility carried by my husband.

I would never have insisted the car windows be rolled up on a summer day because my hair had just been teased and sprayed.

I would have sat on the lawn with my grass stains.

I would have cried and laughed less while watching television and more while watching life.

I would never have bought anything just because it was practical, wouldn't show soil, or was guaranteed to last a lifetime.

Instead of wishing away nine months of pregnancy, I'd have cherished every moment and realized that the wonderment growing inside me was the only chance in life to assist God in a miracle.

When my kids kissed me impetuously, I would never have said, "Later. Now go get washed up for dinner." There would have been more "I love you's." More "I'm sorry's."

But mostly, given another shot at life, I would seize every minute...look at it and really see it ... live it .and never give it back. Stop sweating the small stuff.

Don't worry about who doesn't like you, who has more, or who's doing what.

Instead, let's cherish the relationships we have with those who do love us.

Let's think about what God HAS blessed us with. And what we are doing each day. I hope you all have a blessed day.

Interviewed

I did a phone interview with a a reporter from The Daily News, a newspaper in Longview, Washington, about the BLOODSUCKING REDNECK VAMPIRES showing in Winlock, WA on Saturday. We talked about the movie, the town and other stuff I've done. It will be interesting to see the resulting article.

Finally have decided that I need some new footage for DEADLY PREMONITIONS. One sequence that I'd had a model in Las Vegas shoot for me several years back just has so many technical issues, that it's going to be easier for me to reshoot it with someone here that try and work around everything. Also there was one "killer filler" sequence in the original script that I never got around to shooting. I figured I might not need it, but as I'm geting farther along in editing, I think I'll need it not only for running time, but to break up some other action/scenes. I rewrote the segments slightly last night and talked to someone who might have some casting ideas.

More later....

Sold Out!

Bloodsucking Redneck Vampires is officially sold out at the distributor. I'm out of copies to sell as well. You can still find it at a number of online retailers and via Netflix and Greencine. Sub Rosa plans to make more copies sometime in the future, but no date has been set. I'll certainly post something here when I know anything...

TreeSpirit Wraps

Well, Tom Shaffer finished the TreeSpirit segment of the MONSTER FILES project last weekend. I picked up the last tapes today and he had some behind-the-scenes photos as well.

Here is Rob checking out Tom's fake blood mixture.

34:36

I've got 34 minutes and 36 seconds of DEADLY PREMONITIONS together thus far. Some sound things to work on and some music here and there to get together, but it's coming along.

2:18

Had a busy evening but managed to get another 2:18 of DEADLY PREMONITIONS put together. Also building up a nice file of bloopers so far.

2:47

Dropped the rerecorded line from Toni Draggon into DEADLY PREMONITIONS. Also got another 2:47 edited. Inch by inch...

Bits and Pieces

Am on a brief vacation, but on the way out of town I hooked up with Toni Draggon to record her saying a line for DEADLY PREMONITIONS. I'd had the wrong name in the script and had to get her saying the correct name. We met at a gas station off the freeway and she sat in my car to say her lines, then we were both on the road again. Plan to drop the audio in as we see the character's roommate sitting next to her, so I don't have to try and line up lip movements or anything like that.

My son and his friends have a little rock band and we spent some time this morning recording some original music for the EATER movie. Since my son and these friends all act in the movie, it will be cool for their music to be in it as well.

Have brought some TWISTED FATES stuff with me to work on storyboards and such.

Itching to get back home and continue editing on DEADLY PREMONITIONS, but trying to enjoy a little time off as well.

Got it!

Well, just dubbed off the STARLEEZA SATURNA short to miniDV and it seemed to go smoothly. Need to dub a few VHS copies off and then it's back to DEADLY PREMONITIONS. I shot a short scene for DEADLY PREMONITIONS with Holly the day we shot STARLEEZA. She plays an indifferent 9-1-1 operator.

Onward!

Fingers crossed

I just finished up the edit with sound effects and music for the STAARLEEZA SATURNA short. Will output to tape later tonight - hope it doesn't have any glitches.

Tom Shaffer shot some stuff for TREESPIRIT last weekend. He says he just has one small segment left and it's in the can.

Worked a tiny bit with my son today on a paper mache mask we started last year.

Starleeza Saturna vs. Molly the Merciless

Spent today shooting a goofball sci-fi short with Alexandra Paris and Holly Bernabe. Check out some pics!

23:18

Got a few more minutes edited on DEADLY PREMONITIONS. Figured out a way to use a shot I was planning on re-shooting just by using a filter effect on it. Cool!

Deadly Premonitions Progress

Editing continues. 20:23 so far....

Shot a few insert shots myself tonight. Need to schedule a few pick-ups.

Interesting sound issues. Footage that I had an actress in Las Vegas shoot a few years back when this project was first started was sent to me on CD. The CD will play in my computer, but try as I may, I can import the video into the edting program, but not the audio. So I captured the video and then set up my camera and videotaped the CD playing on screen, recording the video from the computer speakers and have imported THAT footage and started to synch up the sound. Luckily there is not much dialogue. Just lots of bellydancing, skin and blood!

Potions and Blobs!

Shot some stuff with my son tonight for the EATER movie. Here he is making a potion in the kitchen - dry ice is SO COOL!

And here he is shocked that the jello brain that came out of the potion is crawling across the counter!

Happy Birthday to up-and-coming b-movie superstar Eric Spudic, actor Tobey Maguire, Jo Frost (aka Supernanny), country superstar Lorrie Morgan, fashion superstar Vera Wang, easy-to-imitate Ross Perot, and Captain Kangaroo himself Bob Keeshan (R.I.P.).

Oh, and me.

That Was Awesome!!!

Look at this!!!

It's an actual movie ticket for BLOODSUCKING REDNECK VAMPIRES!

About 60 people turned out Friday night to see BRV on the big screen at the Northern Lights Theatre Pub in Salem, Oregon. This was a showing arranged by the guys who run the Mid-Valley Video Festival (http://www.mvvfest.org) and they hope to make it a regular thing - showings of local indie movies. People seemed to dig it - they laughed in the right parts and recoiled in gross-out horror in the right parts. Heck, I even sold three DVDs out of the back seat of my car!

A big thanks to Kirk and Ross from mvvf and to the Northern Lights Theatre Pub for making the space for it all. I'm going to send a couple other movies to the guys to see if we might be able to show something else.

Got some cool things for Father's Day including the book YOUR MOVIE SUCKS by Roger Ebert, the PHANTASM III: LORD OF THE DEAD dvd and the TENACIOUS D - THE PICK OF DESTINY dvd!

What a great weekend!

Times and hairlines may change, but one thing remains: Link Masters is the anchorman of choice for f&c Productions.

Here's Link back in 1998 or so from Vampirisa's Velvet Vault of Horror:

Bloodsucking Redneck Vampires on the Big Screen Again!

Friday, June 15 at 9 p.m. at the Northern Light Theatre Pub, 3832 Commercial St. SE in Salem, Oregon. Admission is only $3 and the place had food, beer and wine for sale, too! Certainly makes the movie that much more enjoyable.

Come on down (or up or over depending on where you live) and laugh out loud at the gross-out horror/comedy wackiness of BLOODSUCKING REDNECK VAMPIRES!! Hope to see y'all there!!!

Fango Debriefing

Back from the Burbank 2007 Fangoria Weekend of Horrors and had a great, great time. I went down with my buddies Rob Merickel, John Bowker and Mike Hegg and Rob drove the whole time! He's a manaic. Or a machine. Or something like that. Anyhow, I took a bunch of photos along the way and am in the midst of sorting and resizing them to post over on my website. Hope to get that up over the weekend.

I met the famous Eric Spudic, whom I've e-mailed with many times and shares the same birthday with me. I knew we would hit it off when he was introduced to me and he said, "Wow! I just farted! Have you been farting a lot?" Eric hung out for a while and then had dinner with us and was full of great little movies stories. What a fun guy.

I also ran into Jeff Dylan Graham who I last saw when we shot stuff in my garage for BLOODSUCKING REDNECK VAMPIRES. Jeff is just starting on his directorial debut and I found out that his birthday is only 2 days before Eric's and mine! I also met Jeff Leroy, who also seemed like a great, funny guy. He was holding a midnight premiere of his WEREWOLF IN A WOMEN'S PRISON movie in LA, but we ended up not going as someone ended up buying us rounds of drinks in the bar that night and (along with other wild stuff going on) it was too good a time to leave.

I met writer/director Michelle Fatale and damn if she doesn't look even hotter in person. I reminded her of my interview with her for Dark Gallery a while back and she told me she remembered it because it seemed like I really did my research to come up with good questions. That gave me a happy warm feeling in my heart since that's what I was trying to do!

We got there too late to see David Naughton of American Werewolf fame. I wonder if anyone asked him about being a Pepper. Or "Makin' It?"

Doug Bradley (Hellraiser's Pinhead) stood behind me in line at the breakfast buffet and pretty much hung out in the bar all weekend. Nice gig if you can get it!

I didn't have much expectations for Heather Langenkamp's appearance. I mean, I went and all, but I'm not a gigantic Elm Street fan or anything. She had great behind-the-scenes tales to tell and seemed to have a good head on her shoulders as she talked about the difficulty of getting work as a 40-ish actress and how she and her husband run a special effects company.

Rob Zombie didn't really seem like he wanted to be there - he's in the midst of editing his take on HALLOWEEN. On the one hand, he didn't want to talk much about it as he wanted us to see it and judge for ourselves if it was a good or bad idea, and didn't want to tip his hand on too many plot details. On the other hand, he kept steering the questions back to HALLOWEEN rather than his other projects. He was trying to get more questions asked to the actresses (and the kid who plays young Michael) he brought with him, but most people just wanted to ask questions of him.

On the opposite end of the spectrum was Eli Roth, who seemed thrilled to death to be there, engaged the crowd with his fanboy enthusiam and talked about everything and anything.

Henry Rollins didn't say much but what he said was entertaining and WRONG TURN 2 director Joe Lynch seemed even more excited than Eli Roth to be there. They showed the opening sequence to WT2 and it was stunningly gross - in that "cool movie gore" kind of way.

I had just read earlier in the week on Aint It Cool News that Thomas Jane had dropped out of Punisher 2 - you could tell from the e-mail they posted (supposedly written by him) that it was a heart-wrenching decision. He so wanted to be involved but in the end the powers that be didn't want to stay true to the comic book. He was there to talk about THE MIST, but someone asked him about P2 and you could tell it was still a tough thing for him to talk about. Kudos to him for having such conviction.

Tony Todd, who was there with his son (who is a musician) mentioned some sort of NBC dramedy called CHUCK that he is in that just got picked up.

Zard Ward (who as a kid played Scut Farkus in A CHRISTMAS STORY) and actress Jackie Tohn had a presentation called the "Wild World of Uwe Boll," and damn if it wasn't entertaining. Boll has a rep for making horrible movies (I have only sat through one - the others I tried I couldn't make it through), but it sounds like he is a madman to work with, in that hilarious sort of way. They had funny stories to tell and outrageous trailers to show and really had a great, fun attitude about it all.

Don Coscarelli, Reggie Bannister, Bill Thornbury, Kathy Lester and Gloria Lynn Henry appeared for a PHANTASM Reunion panel. It was great and I learned a few things I didn't know about the franchise. They were signing the new Anchor Bay releases of PHANTASM 1 and 3 afterwards. The line snaked around a booth and out the door, so I headed outside to get in line. When I got outside I saw that the line snaked waaaay around, but got in it anyway. When the line had only moved a few feet after what seemed like about 15 minutes, I decided to head back inside.

I met Debbie Rochon and was struck by how small she is! I think she's a tad taller than Brinke Stevens but both screamers are tiny little ladies! Both were extremely nice.

Tim Thomerson was so hilarious - just seemed like a regular kinda guy, and I got him to sign my Trancers VHS box! Director Jay Woelfel took two great pictures of Tim and I - wait until you see 'em.

Michael Madsen was there to talk about a new comic book from Fangoria Comics that will be turned into a movie in a year or two, SHIFTER. He'd come from a motorcycle movie shoot that didn't end until 3:30 that morning and he was a tad loopy. At one point, he started banging the microphone on his knee, which made a booming noise in the auditorium. Pleased with himself and oblivious to the rest of the panel (one of whom was speaking), he kept banging it and then added a running commentary:

"BOOM....hey that's pretty cool...BOOM...that sounds like someone's coming...BOOM...Aaah! A giant's coming! Look out!!" It was hilarious. Very entertaining.

We went to see a screening of Thora Birtch's horror flick DARK CORNERS. In her appearance earlier that day, she hesitated to talk much about the plot since it had many twists and turns in it and was one of those movies where you are not sure what is real and what is not. She was a no-show for the screening, which she was scheduled to introduce. The movie itself was confusing. She'd mentioned that it was one of those movies where you and your friends talk about it afterwards, so on the van ride home, we decided to talk about it. None of us could figure out exactly what the 'real' plot was - every time someone came up with a theory, someone else would point out something that didn't jive with it. All in all it was just plain frustrating.

I picked up some cool stuff - Ted Newsome's NAKED MONSTER, Jay Woelfel's BEYOND DREAM'S DOOR, a TRANCERS II miniposter, the STAR WARS HOLIDAY SPECIAL (which my son and I just finished watching and both got a big kick out of it) and NOT OF THIS EARTH, a cool CD of Ronald Stein soundtrack music. It's interesting that when looking at a lot of stuff for sale, Netflix and the internet in general kept popping into my head. Some DVDs for sale I'd already seen via Netflix, others I knew were there or would soon be there. Even some of the bootlegs of old shows like ISIS and ARK II were not interesting because official editions are out or soon to be out and even if I don't buy them, I can rent them via Netflix. Other things like PHANTASM 3, I figured I can ask for for my birthday. I got a pile of color handouts and cards and a couple of free t-shirts, too.

All in all it was a fun trip but I am still trying to catch up on my sleep. I'll post again once I have those photos up.

One Week...

One week until I leave on a roadtrip to the Fangoria Weekend of Horrors in Burbank, California. Looking so very forward to it, but tons of stuff to do at home and work before I go. Hope to post gobs of photos when I get back. That and sleep for a week or so.

Always Something

Recently saw Hell's Belles and they are AWESOME! Highly recommended!

I can't seem to fix the sound issues with the TWISTED FATES segment New Neighbor so will have to start from scratch. Damn.

Sold a lot of stuff at my garage sale. Unfortunately, all of the profits were eaten up a few days later by having to replace a broken garbage disposal. Damn.

ALWAYS MIDNIGHT, the anthology that I shot the John Bowker-scripted short "Tainted Blood" for a couple years back is finally done! You can pick it up at http://www.geocities.com/pharmpon/Falconvideo.html. A copy is currently in the mail to me...

Busy...just not with movies

Cub Scouts, Easter trip, Family visits, TaeKwonDo, Taxes, Hanging Drapes, Elementary School Art Show, Parent/Teacher Conference, Birthdays, Flu and Garage Sale.

I can see the light at the end of the tunnel...I just hope it is not a window.
